Professor & Director, the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies
Application Deadline: January 15, 2025
The University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) in College Park, Maryland, invites applications and nominations for Director of the institute. UMIACS is a research unit of the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, and the Director reports to the Dean of the College.
UMIACS is a multidisciplinary computing research institute led by distinguished researchers and supported by a cutting-edge infrastructure. The institute pioneers computational science involving national defense, precision medicine, big data, cybersecurity, language and culture, and more. Established in 1984, the institute's primary mission is to use a team-based approach—supported by powerful computing resources—to address grand challenges in science and society. Much of the research (exceeding $25 million annually in external awards) is funded by numerous federal agencies and labs in the region. They also regularly partner with physicians and clinicians at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.
The institute is involved in educational activities by supporting more than 200 graduate students from multiple disciplines, such as computer science, engineering, linguistics, physics, information science, human-computer interaction, geographical sciences, and more. The faculty regularly mentor visiting undergraduates through NSF-funded summer internship research programs. The institute provides substantial administrative and technical support for undergraduate interdisciplinary educational programs such as the Immersive Media Design program.
UMIACS is headquartered in the Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering. The Center includes common spaces designed to inspire ideas and collaborations on new ventures and eight classrooms with interactive technology to facilitate collaborative group work.
The Institute Director is expected to:
- Lead the institute in achieving its vision for growth and development and elevate it to the next level of excellence.
- Serve as the chief representative, advocate for the institute, and practice effective shared governance through regular consultation with internal and external stakeholders.
- Enhance the institute's national research profile and strengthen partnerships with national laboratories and institutes, government agencies, and private industry.
- Cultivate excellence in outstanding research, teaching, and service among institute faculty.
- Recruit outstanding new faculty and staff members, make recommendations with respect to tenure and promotions, and ensure equity in hiring and personnel decisions.
- Advance excellence through promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Engage with and attain support from alumni, friends, corporate partners, and others for the institute.
- Plan and administer the institute's budget in consultation with the Dean and the faculty.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in computer science or a related field and be qualified for a full professor position at the University of Maryland at College Park. We are seeking candidates with outstanding records in research and education, along with administrative skills and vision to lead the unit.
