Min Wu Named Christine Yurie Kim Eminent Professor in Information Technology

A University of Maryland expert in digital forensics and multimedia signal processing has been appointed as a Christine Yurie Kim Eminent Professor in Information Technology in the A. James Clark School of Engineering.

Min Wu, a professor of electrical and computer engineering with an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, was selected for the endowed professorship in recognition of her excellent research and her exemplary teaching and leadership abilities.

The endowed professorship was established by Jeong H. Kim and his family. Jeong Kim received the first Ph.D. in reliability engineering from the University of Maryland in 1991 and is now a professor of practice at the Clark School.

“I am deeply honored by this appointment by Dean Samuel Graham, and grateful to the Kim family for their generosity in supporting the Clark School,” Wu says. “There is an incredible legacy from the inaugural holder of the professorship, Dr. K.J. Ray Liu, who was my mentor and collaborator for many years at the university until his retirement. I look forward to taking up the torch of excellence, innovation, leadership and impactful service to the community."

Wu, who is also a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and the associate dean for graduate affairs in engineering, leads the Media, Analytics, and Security Team at UMD. Her group is active in research involving information security and forensics, multimedia signal processing, and applications of data science and machine learning for health and the Internet of Things (IoT).

She is an IEEE Fellow, an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow, and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. Wu was a founding member of the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association.

With IEEE, she has chaired the Technical Committee on Information Forensics and Security and served as editor-in-chief of its Signal Processing Magazine. Wu is currently the president-elect (2022–2023) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

In addition to UMIACS, she holds appointments in the Institute for Systems Research and the Maryland Robotics Center.

Wu completed her undergraduate studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China and her doctorate in electrical engineering from Princeton University before coming to UMD in 2001.
