| Abstract | This article describes the first six years of the Computer Science Department, established in 1973 at the University of Maryland. The department evolved out of the Computer Science Center, which had been instituted in February 1962. In 1980, the National Academy of Sciences judged the department as being among the leading computer science departments in the US. |
