Philip Resnik, a professor of linguistics with an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, was recently quoted in an article that highlights federal efforts to address potential pitfalls associated with the increased use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Resnik, an expert in computational linguistics, spoke on the subject of corporate intent, which identifies the kinds of technological advances a company pursues.
Bias in AI datasets used by the private sector can lead to problems in credit scoring, gender bias in image recognition or racial bias in health care decisions. Resnik says that there is “a large community of researchers” addressing this issue, focusing on principles such as fairness, accountability and transparency.
