Emergency Preparedness

COVID-19 Prevention

If you are experiencing cold-like symptoms, please stay home. If you do come to work while experiencing symptoms, please wear a mask around others. The University of Maryland strongly recommends COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters for all students, faculty and staff.

Emergency Communications

In case of an emergency, call UMD Police, Fire, and Medical at (301) 405-3333 or dial 911. For non-emergencies, contact (301) 405-3555.

For urgent issues such as elevator malfunctions, broken windows, or tripping hazards, call UMD Facilities Management at (301) 405-2222. For other building-related concerns, contact UMIACS Facilities Coordinator J’Vaughn Holmes at (301) 405-6726 or email facilities@umiacs.umd.edu.

Physically Safe Spaces

Identify the emergency exits on each floor. Refuge areas in the Iribe Center are located near the elevators where you can wait for assistance from emergency personnel. There are two assembly points in the building’s front courtyard, one to the right and one to the left.

Severe Weather

During severe weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes, and major storms, remain inside in the central part of the Iribe building, keeping a safe distance from windows. Wait for an official all-clear from emergency personnel before leaving your location.

Active Shooter Events

During active shooter events, avoid the sounds of gunfire, shelter in place, and hide. Close the door, turn off the lights, and silence your electronic devices. If it is safe, attempt to exit through the safest available route, leaving your belongings behind. Once you reach safety, call 911 and inform the dispatcher that you are calling from the University of Maryland campus. Alternatively, use the UMD Guardian app.

Emergency Call Boxes

Blue Light emergency call boxes are located across the courtyard by the Computer Science Instructional Center, and near Baltimore Avenue and Campus Drive, in front of the building.

Power Outages

Do not use the building’s elevators in the event of a power outage.
