A technology startup led by Ramani Duraiswami, a professor of computer science with an appointment in UMIACS, is involved in the development of the latest prototype headset from Oculus VR.

VisiSonics—founded in 2009 by Duraiswami and other UMD researchers—provided its licensed RealSpace3D audio technology for the Oculus Crescent Bay platform, the latest prototype headset on the path to the consumer version of the Oculus Rift.

Crescent Bay features new display technology, 360° head-tracking, expanded positional tracking volume, dramatically improved weight and ergonomics, and high-quality integrated audio.

The addition of RealSpace3D to the prototype allows for high-fidelity VR audio by combining HRTF spatialization and integrated reverberation algorithms.
