Paper Co-Authored By Chetty Accepted to UbiComp 2015 Conference

A paper co-authored by Marshini Chetty, an assistant professor in the College of Information Studies (iSchool) with an appointment in UMIACS, has been accepted to the 2015 ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp 2015), which will be held at Grand Front Osaka in Umeda, Osaka, Japan Sept. 7-11.

For "A Mixed-Methods Study of Mobile Users' Data Usage Practices in South Africa" Chetty and Brent Schlotfeldt, a senior double-majoring in computer science and electrical engineering, traveled to South Africa last summer to conduct a large scale survey, in-depth interviews, and collect logs of actual data usage over time.

Their findings suggest that unlike in more developed settings, when data is limited or expensive, mobile Internet users are extremely cost-conscious and employ various strategies to optimize mobile data usage, such as actively disconnecting from the mobile Internet to save data.

Arunesh Mathur, a second-year doctoral student in information science, analyzed the data Chetty and Schlotfeldt collected and wrote the paper. He will present at the conference next week.
