Three UMIACS faculty members— associate research scientist Cornelia Fermüller and computer science professors Yiannis Aloimonos and Don Perlis are featured in a Terp Magazine story about the pioneering work they are doing to produce smarter robots.
Aloimonos and Fermüller are starting by teaching the robots cooking skills via YouTube videos. Perils (left), who specializes in an area of artificial intelligence known as commonsense reasoning, is lending his expertise by teaching the robots how to reason.
“We’re trying to build the next generation of robots,” Aloimonos says. “These are robots that can interact with people naturally and do a variety of useful things.”
