In
the recent years, technical developments in the area of audio-visual
communications, and in particular, in video coding, have developed
to a point that the telecommunications, computer, film and television
technologies can be combined to create new and exciting opportunities,
with new challenges and new requirements. Among the most important
trends is the need to increase the interaction capabilities between
the user and the audio-visual (AV) information by considering
the scene as a composition of objects, not just a set of pixels.
In
this talk, we will give an overview of MPEG-4. This new audio-visual
standard aiming to establish a universal, efficient coding of
different forms of audio-visual data, called audio-visual objects.
We will introduce the base which MPEG-4 is building on, scope
and features of MPEG-4 standards, the pieces of technology it
includes and the applications which are supported by this technology.
