Introduction to MPEG-2

Abstract:
With a discreet mix of flexibility and efficiency, the MPEG-2 video coding standard is increasing in popularity at such a pace that it is being driving future of digital video. In this talk, I will give an overview of the MPEG-2 standard, and describe in detail parts of the standard that are of particular interest to our current work. The notion of field and frame pictures will be discussed in detail. I will present the various different types of motion compensation techniques used in MPEG-2. Wherever possible, I will contrast the MPEG-2 approach with the MPEG-1 approach. I will try to say a few words about MPEG-4 if time permits.
