• Amy Weinberg and David Doermann talk about machine translation on NPR's "All Things Considered."

2006

• Yi Li, UMIACS/ECE graduate student was awarded best student paper at the 2006 International Workshop on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition (IWFHR) paper entitled “ A New Algorithm for Detecting Text Lines in Handwritten Documents” with Yefeng Zheng, David Doermann and Stefan Jaeger.
• Xu Liu, David Doermann and Huiping Li won the best paper award for their paper entitled “Imaging as an alternative data channel for camera phones” presented at Stanford University at the 2006 International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia (MUM).

2008

• Congratulations to Xu Liu, a CS and UMIACS PhD Candidate
  working with Dave Doermann. Xu recently placed second in the ACM Student
  Research Competition associated with ASSETS2008 in Halifax. His work on
  a mobile currency reader for the visually impaired is being beta tested
  nationwide by the National Federation for the blind, and has qualified
  or the Grand Finals in April. His paper is entitled: A Camera Phone Based Currency Reader for the Visually Impaired

2009

• Congratulations Xu! After a local, regional and national level competitions spanning almost 9 months, the ACM has announced  Xu Liu (CS PhD 2009) as a winner of the 2009 Student Research Award! Details on his research can be found at http://www.acm.org/src/ .  The award will be presented at the ACM awards banquet in San Diego on June 27 th .
