Air Travel

The Washington, DC area is served by three different airports, Reagan National Aiport (DCA), Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI). Bethesda is within easy driving distance from all three. (DCA is roughly 15 miles away, IAD is 25 miles, and BWI is 35 miles.) DCA is the only one that is directly accessible to the DC Metrorail System (DC's subway system). All the airports are easily accessible by rental car, taxi (either Washington Flyer from DCA and IAD or the BWI Airport Taxi from BWI), or shared van (e.g., the Super Shuttle or Airport Shuttle).

Traffic in and around Washington DC, can be slow during rush hour (6:30-9:00am and 4:00-6:30pm). It is a good idea to allow for extra half-hour of travel time, if you are planning to drive to any of the airports during these times.

Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA)

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, commonly known simply as National Airport, is located in Arlington County, Virginia and is the closest airport to Bethesda and downtown Washington, DC.

At Gallery Place/Chinatown, transfer to the Red line (towards Shady Grove) and exit at the Bethesda Metro Station. The hotel is nearby. The fare ranges from around $2.50 to $4.00 depending on time of day.

Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Dulles International Airport is located west of Washington, DC in Norther Virginia. It is not on the Metrorail System, and is most easily reached by car, taxi, city bus, or shuttle bus.

By Taxi:
Roughly $55 to the conference hotel
By Super Shuttle:
Roughly $29 (plus $10 per additional person)
By Public Transit:
Take the 5A Metrobus from the airport (towards the L'Enfant Plaza Station) and exit at the Rosslyn Metro Station. Take the Blue line metro rail (towards Largo Town Center) until reaching the Metro Center Station. Transfer to the Red line (towards Shady Grove) and exit at the Bethesda Metro Station. The hotel is nearby.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)

Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is located northeast of DC, just south of Baltimore. MARC and Amtrak train stations are nearby (connected by a free shuttle bust) and offer train service to Union Station and the DC Metrorail System.

By Taxi:
Roughly $75 to the conference hotel
By Super Shuttle:
Roughly $35 (plus $12 per additional person)
By Public Transportation:
First, take metrobus B30 to the Greenbelt Metro station. Then take the Green line (toward Branch Ave) the Ft. Totten station and transfer to the Red line. Take the Red line (towards Shady Grove) one to the Bethesda Metro Station. The hotel is nearby. The fare ranges from about $6 to $8, depending on time of day. Another possibility is to take the MARC or AMTRAK train to Union Station, and then following directions below for trains.

By Amtrak Train

Washington DC is easily reachable from most major cities on the east coast by the Amtrak Rail System. The closest Amtrak station to the University is the Union Station in downtown Washington, DC. This is also a stop on the DC Metrorail system. Take the Red line (towards Shady Grove) to the Bethesda Station. The hotel is nearby. The Metrorail fare is roughly $2-3, depending on the time of day.
